About Leitrim

A great location for those who love to walk - the mountains and glens of Leitrim have a rugged, yet romantic appeal. Leitrim stretches from the border with Longford to Donegal Bay in the north west and is practically split in two by Lough Allen.

The rivers Shannon and Erne are the two main river systems in Ireland and are linked by the recently restored Shannon Erne Waterway providing 750km of cruising waterway. Carrick-on-Shannon, the county town of Leitrim is the cruising capital of the river Shannon. The town boasts a beautiful modern marina and is the most northerly hire base on the Shannon. Carrick's marinas are well worth a visit, particularly during the peak summer season where a large flotilla of cabin cruisers and river craft of all sizes are active on the river.

County Leitrim is also widely acknowledged for its fine angling and has hosted numerous national and international angling competitions. The unpolluted lakes and rivers in County Leitrim support a huge population of wild fish, including coarse and game. Rowing boats can be hired on the quay near the tourist office on a per-hour or per-day basis. More upmarket launches are available through one of the larger cruiser companies.

For those more inclined towards solid ground, the Leitrim Way (one of Ireland's way marked ways) is a great route to set off on. This walk passes through a variety of landscape features common to this beautiful but little known part of Ireland. Starting at the east shore of Lough Allen, the walker travels through intensely beautiful scenery until it reaches the upland wilderness of Barlear.

Some other attractions to look out for in the Leitrim area include:

Costello Chapel
The Costello Memorial Chapel in Carrick-On-Shannon is the second smallest chapel in the world. It is told that Edward Costello commissioned the chapel in 1877 following the death of his wife. The heartbroken husband spared no expense, and placed his late wife's embalmed body there to rest in peace. Many years later after his passing, Edward Costello's body was placed in the chapel alongside that of his wife.

Glencar Waterfall
Particularly impressive after rain, Glencar Waterfall is 50ft high and is situated in Glencar Lough. There are more waterfalls visible from the road, although none quite as romantic as this one.

Sliabh an Iarann Visitor Centre
The Sliabh an Iarainn Visitor Centre provides an audio-visual display reflecting life, transport and industry between Arigna and the Sliabh an Iarainn mountains. Special emphasis is placed on the railway, canal, lakes, iron and coal mining.

Lough Rynn House
Formerly the home of the Earls of Leitrim, the Lough Rynn estate is an intricate mingling of land and water. At over a hectare in size it's one of the largest in the country. Originally laid out as a vegetable garden it has been extensively replanted in the manner of a Victorian pleasure garden.

The Leitrim Glens Centre
Glens Centre is a lively arts centre hosting a large number of classes and activities, concerts, drama, recitals and readings. It is the home of North Leitrim Glens Tourism Coop which organises fishing, hill walking etc. The Glens Centre also contains two self contained apartments.
