About
Leitrim A great location for those who love to walk - the mountains and glens of Leitrim have a rugged, yet romantic appeal. Leitrim stretches from the border with Longford to Donegal Bay in the north west and is practically split in two by Lough Allen. The rivers Shannon and Erne are the two main river systems in Ireland and are linked by the recently restored Shannon Erne Waterway providing 750km of cruising waterway. Carrick-on-Shannon, the county town of Leitrim is the cruising capital of the river Shannon. The town boasts a beautiful modern marina and is the most northerly hire base on the Shannon. Carrick's marinas are well worth a visit, particularly during the peak summer season where a large flotilla of cabin cruisers and river craft of all sizes are active on the river. County Leitrim is also widely acknowledged for its fine angling and has hosted numerous national and international angling competitions. The unpolluted lakes and rivers in County Leitrim support a huge population of wild fish, including coarse and game. Rowing boats can be hired on the quay near the tourist office on a per-hour or per-day basis. More upmarket launches are available through one of the larger cruiser companies. For those more inclined towards solid ground, the Leitrim Way (one of Ireland's way marked ways) is a great route to set off on. This walk passes through a variety of landscape features common to this beautiful but little known part of Ireland. Starting at the east shore of Lough Allen, the walker travels through intensely beautiful scenery until it reaches the upland wilderness of Barlear.
